Garage Floors Through an Eastern Iowa Winter
Garage floor coating is the most common coating job we do in Cedar Rapids. The related searches Google shows for epoxy flooring here lead with garage floors, and the reason is easy to see in February. Cars bring in slush loaded with road salt, it melts into puddles under the tires, and bare concrete soaks it up. The city averages about 26.7 inches of snow a year at the Eastern Iowa Airport, and January lows average 11.3°F, so that cycle repeats for months.
What salt and cold do to bare concrete
Concrete absorbs water. Salt water that soaks in and then freezes puts pressure on the top layer of the slab, and over a few winters the surface starts to flake. You see it first inside the door and in the tire paths: shallow scaling, exposed sand and stone, and white crust where puddles dried. A coating seals the surface so meltwater sits on top, where you can push it out the door with a squeegee.
Signs it is time to coat
- Flaking or pitting near the overhead door and under the tires
- White salt rings that come back every spring
- Dusting concrete that never sweeps clean
- Oil, coolant or transmission fluid stains soaked into the slab
- A store-kit coating peeling up in the tire tracks
- Cracks, broken control joints or spots where water stands
Older garages and newer garages
About 14.3% of Cedar Rapids homes were built in 1939 or earlier, according to 2019 to 2023 American Community Survey data summarized by Point2Homes. Garages behind those houses are often detached, with thin or patched slabs that may slope or hold water. In Marion, where the median home was built in 1994, and in the newer parts of northern Cedar Rapids, attached garages are larger and the concrete is usually in better shape. We plan prep for the garage in front of us.
Prep is the part you do not see
Most garage coatings fail because they never bonded well. Acid etching, which many kits rely on, cleans the surface but leaves weak, salt-damaged concrete and old sealers in place. We diamond grind the full floor and the edges along the walls, vacuum the dust, degrease oil spots and fill cracks and spalls. Any old paint or epoxy is removed first. Then the base coat goes on a clean, open surface.
Picking a finish
Most garages get a full flake broadcast, which hides salt residue and dirt between washes and gives grip underfoot. Some owners want a solid color with a light flake or an anti-slip additive for a cleaner look. Either one gets a clear topcoat, and we often use polyaspartic for that layer because it resists UV and abrasion and shortens the wait to park. We bring samples so you can see them under your own garage lights.
Winter care for a coated floor
A coated floor still needs some attention in salt season. Push meltwater out with a floor squeegee, rinse the floor every few weeks, and consider a containment mat under each car. Use a plastic snow shovel near the garage, and keep tire chains and studded tires off the coating when you can.
What This Covers
A garage coating covers the whole slab, from the door threshold to the back wall.
Diamond grinding
The whole floor and the edges ground to remove weak, salt-worn concrete and old sealers.
Crack and spall filling
Cracks, broken joints and pitted spots filled and ground flush before coating.
Base, flake and topcoat
A bonded base, a flake or color layer, and a clear chemical-resistant topcoat.
Stem walls and steps
The short concrete curb around the walls and the steps into the house can be coated to match.

Garage Floor Coating Questions
How much does it cost to coat a two-car garage in Cedar Rapids?
HomeGuide's national figures for a two-car garage are $1,600 to $5,800 for epoxy and $2,000 to $6,900 for polyaspartic. Old coatings, salt damage and the finish you pick move the price. We give you a written price after we see the floor.
Is a garage floor coating worth it in Iowa?
For a garage that takes in salt and slush every winter, a well-bonded coating keeps brine out of the concrete and makes the floor easy to clean. It is not worth doing over a slab that is heaving or taking on water. We tell you at the estimate if that is your situation.
How soon can I park on the new floor?
Bob Vila's polyaspartic guide says vehicles can usually go on after about 24 hours, and standard epoxy often needs about three days. Cold weather slows curing. We give you a time for your floor and that day's temperature.
Will the coating be slippery when it is wet?
A smooth, glossy finish can be slick with snowmelt on it. Flake floors have built-in texture, and we can add an anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat on solid-color floors.
