Stone Built This Town. We Coat the Concrete.

Anamosa was built on limestone, and epoxy flooring here often goes into homes and buildings that are older than you might expect. The settlement began in 1838 as Buffalo Forks and took the name Anamosa in 1877. Its best-known building, the Anamosa State Penitentiary, was commissioned in 1872 and built from locally quarried Anamosa limestone. That quarry still operates as Weber Stone Company. A few miles northwest, Stone City shipped more than 150,000 railroad car loads of limestone between 1859 and 1895.

When concrete replaced stone

Stone was the main building material here for foundations and bridge piers for decades. Portland cement production began in Waterloo in 1905, and most Stone City quarries closed in the decades after. So in Anamosa you can find older homes with stone foundation walls and a concrete basement floor that was poured later, alongside newer homes built entirely of concrete.

We coat concrete floors. We do not coat stone walls. In an older basement we test the slab, check where it meets the foundation, and look for signs of water coming in at that joint. If the floor is sound and the moisture readings are workable, basement floor epoxy over a suitable primer turns a dusty floor into one you can mop.

The river and the bluffs

The Wapsipinicon River flows through Anamosa, and Wapsipinicon State Park sits along its sandstone and limestone bluffs on the south edge of town. Homes near the river and in low areas can have damper basements than homes on higher ground. That is one more reason every estimate here includes a moisture test before we recommend a system.

Homes that people own and keep

Census QuickFacts shows that 71.6% of Anamosa homes are owner-occupied, with a median value of $172,600 (2020 to 2024). Housing units grew only slightly, from 1,884 in 2000 to 2,112 in 2020. Most projects here improve a house the owner already lives in. Typical requests:

  • Garage floor coating over an older slab that has been patched or painted
  • Epoxy flake floors to hide salt and dirt in a working garage
  • Basement floor epoxy for laundry rooms and storage
  • Metallic epoxy floors for a finished rec room
  • Shop and commercial floor epoxy for detached shops and small businesses

An artist's hometown

Grant Wood, who painted American Gothic, was born in Anamosa and is buried in Riverside Cemetery. Some owners here like that history and want a floor with character. A metallic epoxy finish is poured and worked by hand, so no two floors look the same. It suits a basement studio or rec room where the floor is part of the look.

Pumpkinfest and a busy October

The state legislature named Anamosa the Pumpkin Capital of Iowa in 1993, and the town hosts Pumpkinfest each October. That is also the end of the warm curing window for unheated garages. If you want a garage done before winter, book the estimate in late summer so the floor can go in while slab temperatures are still good.

Anamosa History That Matters for Floors

  • A limestone town. The Anamosa State Penitentiary, commissioned in 1872, was built from locally quarried Anamosa limestone, and the quarry still operates as Weber Stone Company.
  • Stone City quarries. More than 150,000 railroad car shipments of limestone left nearby Stone City between 1859 and 1895. Portland cement production in Waterloo from 1905 led most of those quarries to close.
  • On the Wapsipinicon. The Wapsipinicon River flows through Anamosa, and Wapsipinicon State Park lies along its sandstone and limestone bluffs at the southwest edge of the city.
  • Mostly owner-occupied. QuickFacts lists a 71.6% owner-occupied rate and a $172,600 median home value for 2020 to 2024, and the 2020 census counted 2,112 housing units.

Anamosa Questions

My Anamosa house has a stone foundation. Can you coat the basement floor?

If the basement floor is concrete, usually yes. We test the slab for moisture and look closely at the joint where floor meets wall. We coat the floor only. If water comes in through the stone walls, that should be handled first.

Can a metallic epoxy floor go in a basement?

Yes, as long as the slab passes a moisture test or gets a moisture-tolerant primer. Metallic finishes work well in finished basements and studios.

When should I book a garage floor in Anamosa?

For an unheated garage, aim for late spring through early fall. Booking the estimate by late summer gives time to install before cold weather.
