Concrete Floors Across Every Cedar Rapids Quadrant

Epoxy flooring in Cedar Rapids covers more ground than most cities its size. Wikipedia lists the city at about 76 square miles, split into NE, NW, SE and SW quadrants by 1st Avenue and the Cedar River. That is our home territory. In one week we might grind a single-stall garage behind a 1920s house in Wellington Heights, coat a basement in Bowman Woods, and seal a shop floor on the southwest side. Each one starts with the same thing: a look at the slab before anyone talks about color.

A city built in waves

Cedar Rapids did most of its growing in the middle of the last century. The census count climbed from 62,120 in 1940 to 110,642 in 1970. American Community Survey data for 2019 to 2023, summarized by Point2Homes, shows that about 41% of local homes went up between 1950 and 1979. Those houses tend to have one- or two-stall garages poured more than 45 years ago. By now that concrete has seen decades of road salt, oil drips and at least one coat of garage paint. Most of it is still structurally fine. The top layer is what wears out.

What that means for your quote:

  • 1950s to 1970s garages: expect us to grind off old paint or sealer and fill scaling near the door.
  • Pre-war detached garages: thinner slabs, uneven pitch and more patching. We check whether water drains out or pools at the back wall.
  • Post-2000 garages: usually sound concrete with a smooth trowel finish that must be ground open before any coating can grip.

After the 2020 derecho

On August 10, 2020, a derecho crossed Linn County. The National Weather Service estimated gusts of 130 to 140 mph in parts of Benton and Linn counties, including downtown Cedar Rapids. The derecho article on Wikipedia reports that the city lost an estimated 65% of its tree canopy and that nearly every structure in town was damaged in some way. Many homeowners rebuilt detached garages, replaced doors or poured new aprons afterward. If your garage slab is one of those newer pours, we confirm it has cured fully and check where new concrete meets old. That seam often cracks first and should be filled before coating.

Basements on both sides of the river

The 2008 flood is part of every basement conversation here. According to Wikipedia, 561 city blocks were severely damaged and at least 1,300 properties had to be demolished. Homes that stayed often had basements gutted and dried out. Today many of those spaces are laundry rooms, gyms and family rooms again. For a basement we lean toward a solid-color epoxy or a metallic finish with a moisture-tolerant primer, and we test the slab in several spots first. Basement floor epoxy goes over clean, dry concrete. Paint residue, tile mastic and carpet glue all come up before we prime.

Shops and business floors

The rapids that gave the city its name made it a mill town. Wikipedia notes that the oatmeal mill built in 1873 became the flagship of Quaker Oats, and today ADM, Cargill and General Mills all run plants here. Trucking is big too, with CRST and Cedar Rapids Steel Transport on the list of top employers. That shows up in the work we see: small fabrication shops, contractor storage bays and owner-operator garages built to hold a truck. For those floors we use our shop and commercial floor epoxy, a thicker 100% solids build with a chemical-resistant topcoat and grit where people walk.

Owners, renters and landlords

Point2Homes puts the city's owner-occupied share at 68.5%, so about a third of homes are rentals. Landlords with duplexes and older houses often ask us for a plain, tough coating in a garage or basement that cleans up fast between tenants. Owners staying put tend to choose a full epoxy flake floor or a polyaspartic system so the garage is usable again in a day or two.

Matching the system to the floor

  • Garage Floor Coating: our standard ground, patched and flaked system for one-, two- and three-stall garages
  • Epoxy Flake Floors: full chip broadcast that hides salt film and adds grip
  • Polyaspartic Floor Coating: a faster cure for spring and fall jobs when the weather window is short
  • Basement Floor Epoxy: moisture-tested and primed for below-grade slabs
  • Metallic Epoxy Floors: poured finishes for rec rooms and dealership spaces
  • Shop & Commercial Floor Epoxy: heavier builds for lifts, carts and fluids

Cold-season scheduling

Cedar Rapids hit -30°F on January 31, 2019, the city's record low. We do not coat an unheated garage in that kind of cold. From late fall to early spring we check slab temperature on the day, heat the space when it makes sense, and favor polyaspartic products that cure in cooler conditions. Basements stay warmer, so basement work runs all winter.

Cedar Rapids Questions

My garage was rebuilt after the 2020 derecho. How soon can the new slab be coated?

New concrete has to cure and dry before a coating will bond well. A slab poured in 2021 or later is long past that, but we still test moisture and look closely where new concrete was tied into an old apron or footing. Those joints are where cracks tend to open, so we fill them before the base coat.

Do you work in the older neighborhoods near downtown?

Yes. Wellington Heights, Oakhill Jackson, Czech Village and NewBo have many older homes with detached garages and patched slabs. Those jobs usually need more grinding and crack repair. We tell you at the estimate how much prep the floor needs and put it on the written quote as its own line.

Can you coat a shop that has a vehicle lift?

Usually. We grind and coat around the lift base plates, or under them if the lift can be unbolted. Lift bays get a thicker build and a chemical-resistant topcoat because of hydraulic fluid and dropped tools. Call [PHONE] and tell us the lift type so we can plan the prep.
