Four Building Eras, Four Kinds of Floor
Epoxy flooring in Lisbon means working with slabs poured across more than a century. Lisbon was laid out in 1851, and American Community Survey estimates for 2019 to 2023 show its homes spread fairly evenly over time: 23.2% built in 1939 or earlier, 17.2% in the 1970s, 17.3% in the 1990s and 16.7% from 2000 to 2009. The median home was built in 1978. With 922 housing units in the 2020 census, a short drive across town can take you through every one of those eras.
Pre-war homes
The oldest houses in Lisbon often have basements with thin or uneven floors and garages that were added or rebuilt later. Expect old paint, patched cracks and surfaces that have worn soft. On these floors we spend more time grinding and filling, and we often suggest a flake broadcast finish because the texture and color hide small surface variations that remain after repair.
1970s ranch homes
Houses from the 1970s usually have attached garages and full basements. After 45 to 50 years, the garage slab has seen a lot of salt and freeze-thaw cycles. We look for scaling near the door, where slush melts first, and for control joints that have opened up. A full epoxy base with a hard topcoat suits these garages well.
1990s and 2000s homes
A third of Lisbon's housing went up in the 1990s and 2000s. These slabs are generally flat and sound. Many still have the original builder's sealer, which has to be removed before anything new will bond. These floors are good candidates for:
- A one-day polyaspartic system for a two- or three-stall garage
- Metallic epoxy in a finished basement
- Flake floors in a mudroom-to-garage entry where boots come in wet
How we price a Lisbon floor
The price is driven by square footage, the condition of the slab and the system you choose. A one-stall pre-war garage with three coats of old paint can take more labor than a clean two-stall garage from 2005. Our written quote breaks the job into lines:
- Measured square footage
- Grinding and removal of old coatings
- Crack, joint and spall repair
- Each coat, by product and color
- The total
If we find something during grinding that changes the job, such as a hidden layer of old adhesive, we stop and write up the change for you to approve before we go on.
Owner-occupied and long-term
The same ACS data shows 80.3% of Lisbon's occupied homes are lived in by their owners. That fits the kind of work we do here: people improving a floor in a house they intend to keep. We put the full scope in writing, including what happens to cracks and joints, so you know what you are paying for.
Part of the same corner of the county
Lisbon sits right next to Mount Vernon, and the CRANDIC interurban once ran from Cedar Rapids through Mount Vernon to Lisbon between 1914 and 1928. Today both towns are an easy drive from our Cedar Rapids base, and we schedule jobs in this part of Linn County regularly. If you have a garage and a basement to coat, we can quote both at the same visit.

Lisbon Questions
My 1990s garage looks fine. Why does it still need grinding?
A sound, smooth slab is often too dense for a coating to grip, and many builders applied a sealer that blocks adhesion. Grinding opens the surface so the base coat can soak in and bond. On a newer Lisbon floor this is usually the main prep step, and it goes faster than on older concrete.
Can you coat the garage and basement in the same visit?
Often yes. The two floors may need different systems, so we test and quote each one separately. Doing both at once can save a trip and keep the schedule simple.
Is there anything you cannot coat in an older Lisbon home?
We only coat concrete. Wood floors, tile laid over a slab, and concrete that is crumbling or heaving need a different fix. If a section has settled or a crack is wider than about a quarter inch, we will recommend concrete repair before any coating.
